Possibly the greatest volcanic eruption in past millennia was that which destroyed the Minoan civilisation on the island that today is known as Santorini in the Greek Cyclades isles.
Down in the middle of the sea that now is surrounded by the tips of the blown-out caldera, lying below Thera the principal town, is now the steaming, rapidly forming, glistening jet-black pieces of lava ejection that promises to become the next future volcano of Santorini.
Today, cruise ships lie at anchor below Thera, close by the newly forming volcano, whilst enthusiastic tourists visit the town above.
