The Summer Palace was the Emperor's retreat for over two hundred years. It also became the prison of one emperor. The Empress Dowager Cixi imprisoned her son here when he tried to institue reforms in 1898. Above is a detail from The Long Corridor. The Palace sits on Kuming Lake, with two temples overlooking the lake - one on Longevity Hill and one on Yu Quan Hill.
