Gumbo's Pic of the Day, Mar. 6, 2014:Whitby Abbey

Whitby Abbey1Whitby Abbey, in England, was founded in the year 657. Abandoned in 867 after a Viking attack.

It was rebuilt in 1220 in its current Gothic style. Then in 1540 it was attacked by soldiers from the army of Henry VIII (8th). He feared reprisals from the Roman Catholic Church following his creation of the Church of England.

It's had a turbulent past but just to finish it off - it was shelled by the German Navy in 1914 and lost the front wall of the Abbey facing the North Sea!

Whitby in North Yorkshire and on the east coast of England is mentioned in Dracula.
