Gumbo's Pic of the Day, June 8, 2014: Two Gentlemen of Verona

No, they're not the ones Shakespeare wrote about; these gentlemen shoulder a different burden, holding up the baptismal fonts of the Saint Anastasia church near the ancient Ponte Pietra. The brick Gothic church dates to the 13th century, but these two are from the late 15th century, and are believed to be the work of Gabriele Casiari, the older son of the painter Paolo Veronese.

 

The interior of the church, below, gives an incredible impression not only of light, but of lightness. Just completely took my breath away.
