Gumbo’s Pic of the Day, June 27, 2014: Kites in a New Delhi sunset

I really like this unusual picture as it instantly returns me to my very special visit to India a couple of years ago when I saw some of the most amazing historical locations that I have ever seen. The Taj Mahal, The Red Fort, Jodphur and Jaipur, the Palace of the Winds, old royal palaces - the list just kept on. It was a most memorable trip that I would love to repeat.

Here, on the last night of our trip, we stood on the roof top of our hotel in Delhi to watch the sunset for one last time. As the sky turned this most amazing shade of orange and the smoke of the cooking fires cloaked even the nearest buildings, we were dive bombed by these large birds - Kites - that spend their entire lives circling in the thermals looking for their next meal to swoop upon. I guess that my shaven head must have looked like a plump chicken from up above and so for an instant I heard a great whoosh of air and brush of a large wing on my cheek as one of the Kites dropped by for a closer look. To this day I am grateful for the fact that it did not have its talons out for me!
