Gumbo's Pic of the Day. January 14, 2014: Calgary Peace Bridge

Calgary Peace Bridge, Calgary, Alberta

Officially opened in March 2012, the Calgary Peace Bridge is the city’s most unique and artistic pedestrian and cycling bridge. The bridge is built across the Bow River and connects the new skyscrapers on its south bank with Crescent Heights on the north bank.  The bridge has since received multiple design awards including being crowned one of the world's top ten public spaces in 2012 by the Designboom.  There are an estimated 6,000 Calgarians using the bridge each day.  The views of the city from the bridge are lovely, as you can see from the photos below.  The bridge enhances the beauty of Calgary's downtown river corridor which can be best appreciated if you climb a hill on the north bank.  It is a recommended destination for all first time visitors.

Glad you like the pictures IslandMan.  Yes Calgary and near by Banff National Park are beautiful parts of the world worth visit.  If you are not into ski, summer (please note, it is very short here) is the best time to come.  Let me know, I will take you to the best spot to see the bridge!  Have a good day.  Dr.Y

Completely agree with my colleague and dear friend.  (Folks may not know that Dr.Y and Dr.F are specialists in the same field).  If you want the best weather and maybe to attend the Calgary stampede, come in early July.  Warmest weather (and the summers are beautiful, non humid and the days long) is July and August.  My favorite time of year is in September, especially the week after labor day.  The crowds are greatly thinned, the weather is still lovely, and the alpine areas of the mountains are in the fall colors.  This is the time of year I'd recommend.

In that third picture, the skyscrapers seem almost to float in a different plane from the foreground...Great image!

By the way, near the bottom right of that picture, I can just make out another interesting-looking bridge--can someone tell us a bit more about that?

The best part of every trip is realizing that it has upset your expectations

You have sharp eyes PHeymont!  The third and fourth pictures are taken from the Crescent Hights, a small hill on the North bank of the Bow River.

In the Calgary downtown core area, there are three bridges (tow for pedestrians and cyclists; one for cars) connecting the skyscrapers on the South bank and residential areas on the North bank of the river.  The peace bridge is out of the picture 3 frame and in all other 3 pictures.

The bridge on the bottom right of the picture 3 is called Bow River Pathway.  It's a pedestrian/cycling bridge connecting the downtown ore - Prince's Island Park - The North bank of Bow river.

The Peace bridge and C-train bridge are further west!  Ha Ha Karl, you need get out more

I do need to get out more!  Of course, I live south of downtown while you look at this view every day.

We'll need to go for a walk there this summer, DrY!  Prince's Island is a great place for those visiting Calgary.  A lovely island oasis right off downtown.  Wonderful escape from bustle of a city and literally just a minute from it all.

This bridge is neat.  When Evan and I were doing our walkabout through downtown and then to the university we crossed the Bow and headed west. A couple of minutes later we came across this bridge and experienced some crosser's remorse at our previous choice of bridge.
