Gumbo's Pic of the Day, Aug. 27, 2014: No Kidding!

DSCF0180It seems like an odd point in the year to remember winter caution, but winter comes earlier some places than others. This reminder is on a series of stairs that go up and down an area of Sulphur Mountain, near Banff, Alberta. They connect the upper terminal of an aerial tramway with restaurants, gift shops etc. But they also connect to the old stairs that go up to the weather station at the summit (below).

Too bad you were there too early to walk to that hilltop.  It's actually a Cosmic Ray monitoring station, long since closed, now a National Historic site in Canada.  Here's a link that tells you a little more about it.

 

The views from up there are much better than from the Gondola terminus, good as those are.
