Gumbo's Pic of the Day, Oct. 4, 2014: A Courtyard in Marrakech

This is what home in Marrakech looks like to me.  The house belongs to my friends, David & Ross, formerly of Scotland, where they now host guests.  Off this central outdoor space are 2 single rooms, 2 double rooms, a kitchen, a traditional Moroccan lounge with lots of books, and stairs on opposite corners to the upper floors where the guys live.  At the very top is a terrace with views over the city, where one can clearly hear the call to prayer moving from mosque to mosque.

My room is through the arch and a turn to the left.  My bathroom is there behind the post.  The neighborhood is a quiet residential part of the medina, not too far from the tourist haunts. A 10 minute walk will get you to the Place Djema el Fna, the food stalls set up each evening not a bad place to eat, if you remember to avoid the snakes.  My preference is to go the opposite way, sometimes to pick up bastila, pigeon pie now made with chicken, that I’ve special-ordered from the bakery.  Or to the local market beyond.  I’m getting homesick.
