France as a whole seems to love carousels; they're to be found in large cities and small and always seem to draw an audience of parents and kids.
This one, one of several I spotted in Strasbourg, occupies a place of honor, sharing his namesake plaza with an elegant statue of Johannes Gutenberg, the European inventor of printing.
As with many other carousels of its period, it's lavishly decorated not only with lights and glitter, but also with idyllic scenes, often reflecting classical themes.
