Glurns/Glorenza, South Tyrol

 

Impressive driving! The coach driver hardly slowed down before tackling the narrow passage. We reckoned that he had gone through it many times before.

The photo was taken in Glurns/Glorenza, a small town close to Italy's borders with Switzerland (to the west) and Austria (to the north). The province is largely German-speaking - hence the town's two names: Glurns in German and Glorenza in Italian. It has a long history and a completely preserved town wall.

The gates, however, clearly were not designed for modern-day traffic—as the photo illustrates.

There is also an attractive church (St. Pankraz) ...

... and if it rains, there are some ancient arcades to protect you from the elements.

We had travelled here from our base in Naturns/Naturno, some 40km to the east, and spent an enjoyable couple of hours just wandering around. After that we were ready for coffee and cake in the square below.
