Germany's €9 ticket reducing traffic

 

Germany's summer special, the €9 all-you-can-ride transit ticket, is not only wildly popular, but transit officials say it has helped reduce road traffic as well.

The monthly ticket, only available for June, July and August, was initiated as a way to offset the effects of inflation, but transit officials have hoped that it would get some people out of cars and onto transit permanently.

The traffic figures are from a study conducted by traffic data specialists studying 26 cities, on dates chosen to avoid the impact of public holidays. They found that while in the first few days there was little effect, but after that significant declines in rush hour congestion were measured in 23 of the 26 cities.
