Genoa's new bridge takes shape

A new bridge, made necessary by the tragic collapse a year ago of its predecessor, is under construction in Genoa and is a sure-fire future attraction as well as a key link for the high-speed highways in the area.

The new bridge, designed by famed 'starchitect' Renzo Piano will replace the 1960s-era Morandi Bridge that collapsed, killing 43 people. The new bridge, by the designer of the Centre Pompidou in Paris and London's Shard, will be over a kilometre long, and made up of 19 decks assembled off-site and then lifted onto concrete towers.

The new bridge is scheduled to open in April 2020, a stunning speed for a major project. The August 2018 collapse of the old bridge has been blamed on both design flaws and faulty maintenance by the private company that has a franchise to operate the motorways.  A legal case, with 71 defendants from both company and government, is making its way through the courts.

The best part of every trip is realizing that it has upset your expectations
