Frontier: All-you-can-fly, but watch for asterisks!

Frontier Airlines has rolled out its promised all-you-can-fly pass at $599 a year, but there are more than a few caveats and unknowns to the deal, which the airline calls the GoWild! Pass.

For a start, if you don't watch the dates, the pass will auto-renew at $1,999 for the second year unless you cancel in time—and given the rest of the questions, you might want to.

The pass is on sale now, but its validity starts in May, 2023. It covers all of Frontier's routes in the U.S. and Puerto Rico (an earlier announcement had said it would cover all of Frontier's destinations, including international.

Once you buy the pass, airfare on any flight is charged at 1¢—"plus applicable taxes, fees and other charges at the time of booking." It's not clear yet what 'fees and other charges' that would be, since Frontier is known for charging for seat selection, checked bags, carry-ons and more, which could make a big change in the actual cost.

There's also a list of 56 'blackout days' when the pass is not valid, most of them the typical peak travel dates.

But the biggest asterisk is that passholders can only book  and confirm their next flight the day before travel. As big a problem as that could be when planning a getaway to somewhere, it could be even bigger if you've gone to Vegas for the weekend and can't find a seat on a flight back. Although, for the most footloose among us, that might not be the biggest problem—if you're willing to fly to wherever there's a seat available.

UPDATE

Shortly after this story appeared, Frontier added its international destinations into the mix. However, two days after that update, the price of the GoWild pass was increased to $799. The pass is available through November 22.
