From A to Z: A year of animal days

We've tried to brighten the days of virus worry a bit with an occasional cute animal story—they're not hard to come by—so now we're pleased to offer a link to some of their special days.

Because yes, even the animals have travel habits, too. Salmon come to mind, swimming upstream to their spawning grounds (and to die); reindeer wandering across the far north, following the seasons, and yes, whale sharks, too. The South Atlantic island of St Helena, where Napoleon spent his last days, is where they congregate to breed and feed, and August 30 is their day on the calendar: International Whale Shark Day. Incidentally, although they grow as large as a school bus, their whole diet consists of tiny plankton.

There's even a website with an extensive list of those special days. For manatees (see picture) March 31 is Manatee Appreciation Day. Some of the others on the long list are Penguin Awareness Day (January 20), Adopt a Rescued Rabbit Month (February), Serpent Day (February 1), World Frog Day (March 20), not to be confused with Save the Frogs Day on April 27, a date shared with National Go Birding Day and Eeyore's Birthday Day (yes, day day).

The best part of every trip is realizing that it has upset your expectations
