Friendly Rivalry Over The Start Of Mardi Gras

Where is the birthplace of Mardi Gras in the US? It seems it depends on who you ask. Mobile and New Orleans have enjoyed a friendly rivalry about it's birthplace over the years. In this Mardi Gras season, the Mayor of Mobile is touting Mobile as the city where Mardi Gras originated in the US in billboards and a video. One billboard is along Interstate 10, so that people headed towards New Orleans can see it.
