French tourism finally on the rebound

Foreign travel in France, which slumped after the 2014 Charlie Hebdo attack in Paris and was further affected by the terror attacks in Paris in November 2015, has begun to climb back to normal.

Insee, France's national statistics agency, says the number of overnight stays rose 3.9% for the last quarter of 2016 compared with 2015, and higher than the last quarter of 2014, recorded before the attack.

According to Insee, regional towns and cities had the best gains, ahead of Paris, which is still off many people's lists after the November attacks. For that reason, the city is concerned about any bad news, including last week's attempted machete attack at a shopping mall near the Louvre.

The big gain, over 9%, was in the luxury segment of the market.

Overall, France had 85 million foreign visitors in 2015; the 2016 numbers are not yet published. Before 2014's events, France's tourism promotion authorities were publicly aiming for 100 million visitors by 2020. It may still make it.

The best part of every trip is realizing that it has upset your expectations
