French ski resort bans butts

Les Gets, in France's Haute-Savoie region, has become the first European resort to ban smoking on its slopes, with the goal of eliminating the tons of burnt butts that smokers leave behind.

Smoking is still permitted in the village, although the eventual aim is to make the area tobacco-free. The move gained impetus when a clean-up campaign last year on 'Clean Mountain Day' collected over 3,000 butts on the slopes. Overall, according to town officials, France accumulates 20 to 25,000 tons of cigarette butts from open spaces.

Although it is the first ski town in Europe to implement a smoking ban, bans have have been introduced in some resorts in North America, Japan and New Zealand.

The best part of every trip is realizing that it has upset your expectations
