France tests pedestrian warning lights

Seven French cities will be testing a new traffic control: A yellow warning light to tell pedestrians the light is about to turn red and they should wait on the curb.

The test will run in Metz, Nancy, Nantes, Nice, Strasbourg, Toulouse and Versailles, with the yellow light meaning 'if you've started, clear the intersection quickly, and if you haven't started, don't even think about it.'

At present, some cities use a flashing red or a countdown clock for the same message, but officials believe it is often ineffective. The test will take place in two forms; one with a steady yellow and the other with blinking yellow. Data from the experiment will be used to determine future traffic rules.

The best part of every trip is realizing that it has upset your expectations
