A French 'Mobility Orientation Law,' passed in 2019, goes into effect next month, giving a big push to secure parking for Paris bicycles. The law requires apartment buildings that provide secure parking for cars to provide it for bicycles, too.
That's a big plus for efforts to increase bicycle commuting; if you have to leave a bike on the street, it can be stolen or damaged, ending the commute. Cycling in France has increased by 33% over 2019, and by 11% in the first nine months of this year.
Many apartment buildings have strict rules covering where bikes can't be parked, such as in hallways; now the shoe will be on the other foot. Of course, it won't be an overnight change. The first step under the law is a requirement for home-owner associations to meet, make plans to follow the law and determine the cost, and to apply for an exemption if a plan seems impossible.
