France: Fun on the freeway, without playing in traffic

If Paris can close the Champs-Elysees to traffic for a pedestrian day, why not the super-highway as well? And the answer, sponsored by France's association of Autoroute concession companies, is a huge Sunday Motorway Party this Sunday, May 22.

The first-ever (and possibly-to-be-annual) Fete des Autoroutes will shut down a number of road sections, totaling about 50 km, for activities ranging from races to skating to balloon rides to circus shows and more, including concerts, zumba classes and art projects. Even the huge Millau viaduct (above) will be part of the party, lasting from 9:30 am to 5:30 pm.

Many of the areas are outside cities, but some will be urban as well, including a block party in a tunnel in Marseille. For more details and a list of events from TheLocal.fr, click HERE
