The visitors center has a wonderful museum that shows the history of the land and the Fort. The museum has lots of artifacts found in the area.
History of Area and Fort:
The Chignecto region was within one of the districts of the Mi'kmaq people. Acadians settled the region in 1670.
The French constructed Fort Beausejour from 1750 -1751 to protect their interests in the Chignecto region. They built the Fort in a star-shape to repel attackers through cross-fire.
In June of 1755, British and New England troops captured the Fort and it was renamed Fort Cumberland. The Nova Scotia Council used some Acadian participation in the defense of the Fort as one reason to begin the Deportation of Acadians from the Chignecto region to all over the world. The Fort was used as the initial headquarters and prison for the Deportation.
Fort Cumberland later repelled a rebel American attack in November of 1776. It was abandoned in 1835 and declared a national historic site in 1920.
The constant battles of England and France in Acadia gave me insight why the French helped the Americans so much.
