Food madness again: Naples to bake 2km pizza!

Jealous of Milan's record-breaking 1595-meter pizza, baked during last year's Expo, Naples is planning to bake one 2 kilometres long.

And it is a jealousy issue: the local organizer, Alessandro Marinacci, told TheLocal.it “It's absolutely a point of pride for our city, which is the home of pizza. What's more, unlike Milan's Expo pizza, our effort will be cooked in the traditional Neapolitan style.”

The Neapolitan contender will be a Margherita pizza, first made in Naples in 1889 for Queen Margherita. The organizers have built five motorized wood-burning ovens on wheels, which will pass over the loooooong pizza, baking as it goes.

The baking will be done along the waterfront, with hundreds of volunteers, including from other countries, working about 11 hours to bake the pizza, which will be 40 cm wide and 2 kilometers long. (And no, you can't order one and have it delivered.)

The best part of every trip is realizing that it has upset your expectations
