Faxi Falls, Iceland

We had not heard of Faxi Falls until we spotted a reference to it on our roadmap (Yes, we still use printed ones, albeit often in conjunction with a GPS-based system). The falls were a lucky find.

The setting is absolutely stunning and we certainly had not expected such a wide and powerful waterfall.

We spent some two to three hours here, sitting in the sunshine on the chairs of a cafe which had clearly not been open for a while. For most of that time we were the only visitors, apart from a couple of anglers who were trying their luck in the fast-moving waters.

The falls are located just off route 35, a short distance south of the Haukadalur geyser areawhere the next two photos were taken. The second shot is of Strokkur, the largest active geyser there.

We stayed at the Hotel Geysir, where you can actually see the eruptions (in the distance) from your breakfast table.

Staying here also allows you to visit the geyser area before the tour buses arrive, or after they have left.
