In the face of increasing incidents of air rage and harassment, the Federal Aviation Administration has shifted gears and warned it will impose fines of up to $35,000 for unruly passengers. The warning comes after a number on incidents before and after pro-Trump disturbances in Washington, DC.
The FAA has always had the power to impose fines, but previously has only given warnings, counseling or civil penalties. Under the new procedure, "any passenger who assaults, threatens, intimidates, or interferes with airline crew members" will find the agency bypassing first steps and going straight to fines.
While the FAA doesn't have authority over no-fly lists, it does work closely with law enforcement and national security agencies, and will also refer incidents to the Justice Department or local police.
