Eurostar, Eurotunnel, ferries shut by sailor protests

Striking ferry workers stand behind their burning barricade near Calais

No channel ferries, no Eurostar trains and no Eurotunnel shuttle services this afternoon, as protesting French sailors shut down the ferries and swarmed onto tracks leading into the rail tunnel on the Calais side.

The sailors and port workers, who work for MyFerryLink, formerly SeaFrance, are protesting the company's plans to sell some of its ferries to rival DFDS.

Because of people on the tracks, and also because of burning tires they piled up there, Eurotunnel officials closed off service in both directions for safety reasons, according to their statement. The company is advising travelers to postpone plans at least until tomorrow (Wednesday).

"Some" trains were stuck at points along the line, but none in the tunnel itself. Trucks and other vehicles were reported jammed up along many of the roads leading to the tunnel.

I may get myself in trouble, not the first time, but this sort of behavior, inconveniencing their fellow citizens as well as others, seems to be particularly part of French workers' way of doing things, and an aspect of the culture in general, self-aggrandizing on many levels.  I love France, but not this particular national trait.
