Europe's best beach is where? Really?

When you think of spectacular beaches in Europe, you're likely to have in mind the sunny sands of Greece or Spain or Portugal, right? Maybe the French Riviera? But not a beach 850 miles north of Oslo, Norway, and four degrees of latitude north of Reykjavik, Iceland.

And yet, readers of the Lonely Planet series and sites have given the title of Best Beach in Europe to Haukland Beach on the island of Vestvågøy in Lofoten, on Norway's northwestern coast, facing the Norwegian Sea, where the temperature barely breaks 60ºF even in summer.

The choice appears to have leaned heavily on the beauty of the setting; the article said “Haukland Beach is out of this world, with spiky granite peaks thrusting above creaming sands and sapphire seas. The water is chilly, but you’ll be itching to jump in all the same." The pictures below certainly confirm the beauty.
