As part of its effort against spread of coronavirus and to be ready for the eventual return of visitors, Egypt has disinfected the Giza Pyramids. The work is taking advantage of low attendance since flights were canceled.
The work, carried out by teams wearing hazmat protection and using industrial cleaning equipment, has sterilized the area, including the pyramids, ticket offices, walkways around the monuments and the Sphinx and the walk-through areas normally open to visitors.
Ashraf Mohi al-Din told reporters that "We take advantage of this suspension to prepare the archaeological zone in terms of maintenance and restoration so that when tourism recovers, the area of the pyramids is in its maximum splendor to receive its visitors."
Other major tourism areas have also been closed, and tourism workers in areas including Aswan and Luxor have been quarantined, and all passengers and crew on Nile cruises have have been tested for Covid-19. Those who were infected have been moved to quarantine hospitals.
