Dutch 'musical road' turns ear-worm

A clever roadside installation that turns the highway into a crude musical instrument that plays a patriotic tune has gotten the thumbs (or maybe ears) down in 2018's European Capital of Culture, Leeuwarden, Holland.

The installation, which uses cars driving over road stripes to activate vibrating roadside sounders, drew so many protests that it has now been dismantled by local authorities. As one local resident told RTL Nieuws, "The Frisian national anthem is fine, but not 24-hours a day. I’m going nuts. You can’t sit outside and you can’t sleep at night."

It's not the world's only singing road; another, in California, also had to be removed after complaints.
