Dutch dogs to get passports, too

In an announcement timed to match last Thursday's Animal Day celebrations, the Netherlands announced a new plan to provide every Dutch dog with its own passport.

The move isn't an attempt to get more dogs to travel, but rather a way to track stolen or mistreated dogs, and to keep track of their health, especially when they are sold. About 150,000 dogs were sold in the Netherlands last year.

But, in the long run, it may prove a help for travelers who like to take their pets along for the ride, since the passport will provide a government-verified health record that may help when traveling to other countries.

The best part of every trip is realizing that it has upset your expectations
