Dutch cyclists fined for phoning

If you're one of those who've nearly been hit by a cyclist who was busy on his phone, you'll be happy to know that at least one country is doing something about it, including imposing fines of €95 for not using a hands-free.

The fines are slated to go into effect July 1, after approval by the Netherlands cabinet. The new rule, which applies for the first time to cyclists, also covers other vehicles, with higher fine levels, up to €240 for car drivers. Cyclists were already subject to fines for cruising through red lights or riding while drunk.

Authorities say nearly half of cyclists use their phones while riding and phones are said to have been involved in about 20% of bike accidents involving under-25s.

The legislation, by the way, refers to 'mobile electronic device' as a hedge against arguments over devices that may not technically be phones.

The best part of every trip is realizing that it has upset your expectations
