Deutsche Bahn's €10 billion upgrade plan

German rail operator Deutsche Bahn is planning billions of Euros in upgrades and repairs this year to catch up on declining on-time records and system congestion.

The system paid out over €50 million in compensation last year for cancelled and delayed trains, and faced increasing criticism over its performance. This year's plan, focused on the lines shown above, is a significant boost over last year's.

Among the bottleneck areas where capacity will be upgraded are those between Cologne and Dortmund, Fulda and Mannheim and Würzburg and Nuremberg.

The best part of every trip is realizing that it has upset your expectations
