Husky the Muskie is the name of a 40-foot-tall (12 m) outdoor sculpture situated on beautiful Lake of the Woods. You'll find Husky just off the TransCanada highway in McLeod Park as your driving through Kenora, Ontario. Husky is a gigantic Muskellunge, a game fish related to the northern pike which is popular in the waters of Northwestern Ontario. The original Husky was constructed in 1967 as a Canadian Centennial project and it has since become accepted as the town's mascot. Husky was rebuilt in 1995.
McLeod Park is a nice stopping point for views of Lake of the Woods. It's an attractive small park, framing the leaping Husky.
As you walk past Husky and stand by the Lake, to your right is Lake of the Woods Hospital, the only hospital I've ever visited that has a boat dock. I spent 6 fun and interesting weeks working in this hospital as a medical student in the early 1980s. I love this region of Canada -- the lake and bush country of the Canadian Shield -- and enjoyed my time here.
