Dec. 31, 2019: Mystras, Byzantium's Second City

 

Mystras, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is a castle town that was very strong in the Byzantine times. It was the second most important town after Constantinople at the end of the period.

It was here in 1448 the last emperor of Byzantium, Constantine XI Palaeologos, was crowned, shortly before Constantinople was captured by Turks.

Along winding paths you’ll discover the Palace of the Despots, the Houses of Laskaris and Frangopoulos, the beautiful Cathedral of Saint Sophia and Saint Dimitrios, and the impressive Monasteries of Our Lady Pantánassa, and of Οur Lady Perivleptos.
