Dec. 29, 2017: Cais do Sodre Station, Lisbon

This Art Deco railroad station is at one of Lisbon's busiest transit junctions, with a Metro station and the terminal for Tagus River ferries next door. It replaced the original 1895 station 1928, and was designed by Porfírio Pardal Monteiro, one of Portugal's leading architects of the 20th century.

Pardal Monteiro combined the modern style with decorative motifs that combine Portuguese traditions, including the tile section above.

The station now has an even more modern accompaniment, the city's name spelled out in these jaunty sculptures made of recycled plastic bins and other pieces.
