Cruise lines offer land-only Alaska

With Alaska cruises shut down for the year by Canada's closing its ports and waters, two Carnival-owned cruise lines are offering land-based packages instead.

Holland-America and Princess lines, both of which normally operate dozens of cruises every summer, are offering both escorted and independent tours, including many to interior destinations including Denali National Park and Mount McKinley as well as the usual coastal destinations that the ships visit. There will also be rail itineraries to a number of locations.

In the coastal towns, most of the local excursions and day trips offered to cruise passengers will be available, but one  of the most popular won't: the only access to Glacier Bay is by ship.

The best part of every trip is realizing that it has upset your expectations
