A Dutch court has dealt Amsterdam a setback in its effort to curb 'overtourism' in its central area, ruling that the city didn't have the right to ban short-term rentals, such as Airbnb, in specific areas.
The case was brought by a group of landlords and homeowners who objected to the city allowing rentals only in other parts of the city. It is also changing other rules for types of businesses permitted, banning foreign visitors from marijuana coffee houses, and possibly moving its red light district.
The court did affirm that the council can impose restrictions, such as requiring a permit and limiting the number of rental nights to 30. If the city is not successful in appealing the decision, the city will likely use that route.
