Coming soon: 777s so big their wings fold

Computer rendering of the 777-9x

Boeing's biggest 777s are on the way, with wings so long they have to partly fold after landing to avoid hitting other planes and buildings. Production is just starting on the final design for the X series, which includes a 777-9x and 8x. The first deliveries are scheduled for 2018.

The X models feature new, more fuel-efficient engines, lighter bodies with more composite materials, and the longer wings. Boeing expects the giant wings to give extra lift, like a sailplane glider, which will also contribute to fuel efficiency. They will be the longest wings ever built for a plane, 235'5", or 71.8 meters. A full 7 meters of that will fold out of the way before the plane leaves the runway to taxi to the terminal.

The planes are aimed at the large-widebody market, also occupied by Airbus's A350. The current 777 series will be, by next summer, the widebody plane with the most deliveries ever. The 9x will be significantly longer than the current 777-300ER, holding up to 400 passengers, while the 8x will be the same length, but have longer range for long routes.
