Canada has a list of sites it's submitted for World Heritage Status, and it's asked the public to help beef up the list to be submitted for consideration next year.
The current list was last revised in 2004, and five of the 11 sites on it have been accepted by UNESCO. Catherine McKenna, the Minister responsible for Environment and for Parks Canada, has created an advisory committee to review sites recommended by the public.
In a statement, she said "The 150th anniversary of Confederation is an opportunity to reaffirm our commitment to preserve our natural environment. We want to encourage Canadians to feel a sense of attachment to magnificent cultural and natural places, and build a deeper connection to the places that make our country unique in the world."
Canada currently has 18 UNESCO sites; the most recently-added one is Mistaken Point in Newfoundland and Labrador, added last summer. The photo above shows Ediacaran fossils at Mistaken Point.
