Canada: New air passenger rights

Canada's Transportation Agency has announced a significant improvement in passenger rights when flights are delayed or canceled, as well as improved refund rights.

The new rules, taking effect September 8, give new rights for disruption whether or not the reason is something the airline can control. Under the old rules, passengers were entitled to a refund when there was a cancelation an extensive delay; under the new rules passengers can choose between instant re-booking on a flight that departs within 48 hours or a full refund.

Significantly, considering widespread complaints during the height of the pandemic, the refund must be made within 30 days, and made back to the original form of payment, usually a credit card. Vouchers that may or may not  suit the passenger are no longer a valid refund.

Perhaps the new Canadian rights will prompt U.S. passengers to step up a campaign for passenger rights in the U.S., where in the absence of a national rule, it's pretty much up to each airline to set its own policies.

The best part of every trip is realizing that it has upset your expectations
