Canada gets birthday present: Named as top destination

Lonely Planet has named Canada, which celebrates 150 years as a nation in 2017, as next year's top country to visit—and that's not even because of the number of Americans who say they'll move there if their candidate loses.

A combination of great tourism infrastructure, a 'weak' currency that makes for bargains, and an incredible array of sights to see put Canada at the top of the list, followed by Colombia and Finland.

Lonely Planet's destination editor for Canada said “Canada is always popular with us, but there are several things going on in 2017 that made it number one. First, it’s the country’s biggest birthday party in recent memory with the sesquicentennial next year, and they won’t be shy about celebrating."

Colombia was cited as the "ultimate comeback kid." And Finland, which also celebrates an anniversary next year, its 100th, will be hosting the World Figure Skating Championships and Nordic Ski Championships.

The best part of every trip is realizing that it has upset your expectations
