Canada gets a real gut-wrench coaster

If you're one of those people always looking for the next scary but supposedly safe thing to do, Quebec's La Ronde amusement park is looking for you with a new roller coaster that puts the passengers in whirling, tumbling seats that hang next to the track.

Set to open in 2020, Vipère is designed to give the illusion of weightlessness, with the seats, eight to a pod, some facing forward and some back, taking riders through free-falls and somersaults.

The ride starts with the cars on a 107-foot elevator lift to the top. Each of the vehicles spins on its own so that no two trips will be the same—a real incentive for repeat business from anyone who doesn't lose lunch the first time. Or maybe that's what they want!

The best part of every trip is realizing that it has upset your expectations
