California: PCH repair ahead of sked

The big gap in California's Pacific Coast Highway that opened up during a January storm that sent a huge chunk of highway down the hill and into the sea will reopen by April 30, almost two months ahead of schedule.

The road collapse created huge detours for traffic in the area, because the highway, also known as California 1, has few connections across the mountain range to other roads between Monterey and San Luis Obispo.

The repair process has involved filling the canyon that opened up with compacted dirt, starting in early March. When they reach the level of the old road, they will lay the base of the new road on the fill, and then pave and stripe it. Final date of completion is subject to favorable weather conditions.

The best part of every trip is realizing that it has upset your expectations
