Bordeaux planning a cable car

Bordeaux, France may soon join the elite lists of cities that have incorporated overhead cable cars, most often seen in high mountains, into their city transit plans.

The city is investigating several possible routes to better link the city's east and west sides, separated by the Garonne River. City officials see the project, expected to cost €53 to 73 million, as a way to link their two tram systems and to increase opportunities on the under-served right bank.

A series of public consultations is taking place before a final route is chosen from several alternatives. One local mayor says the cable cars “will be a very fast means of daily transportation for inhabitants, an attractive emblem for tourists and an architectural pride for all those who will visit it."

Other French cities with cable cars are Brest, Toulouse and Grenoble. They also exist in London and Barcelona, and one is under consideration for Paris.

The best part of every trip is realizing that it has upset your expectations
