I'm not usually as impulsive as that, but if I were, I might be inclined to trust booking.com as much as I trust the "find a hotel" desk at the train station! Too bad they haven't released an Android version...but I'm sure that's coming.

The best part of every trip is realizing that it has upset your expectations

I've found that just using the booking.com website at the last minutes is very good for getting a room.  For example, canceled flight and needing a place near an airport.  It lets you see what's still available and at what prices.
