Dutch cyclists put well over a billion Euros into new bikes last year, with electric models a growing share of the purchases and a lion's share of the cost.
The €1.2 billion price tag bought a million new bikes into service, and for the first time, electric or electric-assist bikes outsold traditional city bikes. With over 400,000 sold, they accounted for 40% of sales and nearly 80% of the cost, at an average of €2,000 each. City bikes took 33% of the market, with the rest divided among trail bikes, mountain bikes and cargo bikes.
It's expected that bike sales will rise again next year as new rules kick in, requiring employers to pay 19 cents per kilometre travel expense to employees who cycle to work.
