The Transportation Security Administration is disappointed with how few of us have signed up for its PreCheck program, which speeds pre-cleared travelers through airport security and scanning quickly. And its ready for new ideas to recruit more members.
TSA's interest in the program is that the more people it can move quickly, the fewer agents and the fewer long lines it will have. For travelers, PreCheck means keeping their shoes and belts on and leaving laptops and liquids in their bags. It comes with an interview and a fee of $85 for five years.
TSA Acting Deputy Administrator Patricia Cogswell told USA Today last week that the agency is willing to try a number of ideas. Bringing down the cost is one possibility, not by reducing the overall but perhaps allowing it to be paid on an annual subscription basis. Other ideas include more on-the-spot enrollment kiosks in airports.
