Berlin: Tegel Airport gets a temporary reprieve

Berlin's Tegel Airport, loved by Berliners and travelers but doomed by Covid and the near completion—finally—of Berlin's new Berlin Brandenburg Airport, has been given an unexpected five-month reprieve as air traffic starts to resume.

The airport was originally supposed to close then the new airport opened, but the date was moved up to mid-June because there was so little air traffic it was decided to move all flights to Berlin Schonefeld, whose terminal sits across the tarmac from the new airport.

But now that Germany and its neighbors are opening borders to each other and air traffic is picking up, authorities have decided that Schonefeld couldn't handle the load on its own and still maintain proper social distancing. Once Berlin Brandenburg opens, Tegel will shut, despite a popular referendum two years ago that showed a majority for keeping it open.

The best part of every trip is realizing that it has upset your expectations
