Berlin: Airport open, airport closing

Well, not quite: Berlin's new airport, which opened last fall after more than a dozen years of delays and disasters, is still open—but continuing low passenger volume has led to the airport closing one of its terminals and putting off opening of another.

Terminal 5, which began life as the main terminal of the former East German Schoeneld Airport, will close by February 23, with its mostly budget airlines shifting to Terminal 1 in phases starting this week. The Terminal underwent major renovation last year to bring it in line with the new terminal.

BER's Terminal 2, built in anticipation of continuing traffic growth predicted for Berlin, will not open until it is needed. Originally, that was expected to be this year, but that is no longer the case. In contrast to the long delays in building Terminal 1, T2 was built in three years from plan to completion as Berlin's other airports were closed.

The best part of every trip is realizing that it has upset your expectations
