Berlin Airport: Back in the News

For those of you who remember TravelGumbo's years-long coverage of the years-long saga of the long-overdue new Berlin Airport—and who thought that everything was down to normal now that the airport is open—we're back!

The airport administration announced last week that it will permanently close down Terminal 5, the former main terminal of East Germany's Schoenefeld Airport. It will keep open the newer Terminal 1, which opened in 2020, nine years late and Terminal 2, which opened in 2020, on time. The press release claimed the airport was returning to its original 'single-roof' plan.

T5 was closed early in the pandemic, although it was briefly used as a mass vaccination center. It was scheduled to re-open next year, but that has been canceled, with an anticipated savings of €25 million a year in operating costs.

Swept under the table, perhaps, is the €41 million spent in 2020 to refurbish and update Terminal 5 in preparation for its intended new role, as well as the cost of updating rail and road connections between the terminals.

The best part of every trip is realizing that it has upset your expectations
