Belgium: rare bird puts paid to nude beach

Belgium's one nudist beach, at Bredene, will continue to be the only one for some time as a small, but rare, bird has derailed plans for a second haven for all-over tan fans.

The existing beach is so popular and sometimes crowded that Belgian naturists began campaigning for a second beach, and thought they had found the solution, a little-used beach near Westende. However, the Flemish Agency for nature is opposing the bid on behalf of the crested lark, which uses the area as a brooding ground.

The agency says that brooding would be disrupted, and might be further dismayed by "subsidiary activity" in the dunes behind the beach, including rubbish.

The best part of every trip is realizing that it has upset your expectations
